The other day, I was sitting in a restaurant when a man came in and sat down at a table with his young son. They were an endearing pair a la Elian and his father. Both father and son seemed to be very happy with the situation and the little boy was well-behaved and awfully cute. Okay, pretty run of the mill right? Well, the way the people in the restaurant acted, you would have thought that this father was some kind of football hero who cured cancer in his off-season. Waitresses cooed, patrons actually walked over to the table to tell him how cute his son was and how noble they thought he was. He replied,

"He's my best friend, I don't know what I'd do without him."

What dreck! Come on! Single moms sit in restaurants all the time with equally adorable children and no one says a word. I'm sure this particular parent/child situation is very happy, great for them, but the response to them as well as the father's well-rehearsed comment really annoyed me. This guy is merely fulfilling his end of the bargain, he is doing what every father should be doing: caring for his child! It's not that people shouldn't let him see that they appreciate the way he taking care of his son, but they should also respond to all the mothers out there who are doing the same. Just because so many fathers don't devote their time to their children, doesn't mean we should give this guy a medal.

Okay, well my rant is over. Just don't get me started on SUVs.

Have a good weekend.
